A Weekend Away From Everything
When Emily Carter booked a secluded lakeside cabin for the weekend, she imagined peaceful sunsets, fresh mountain air, and a chance to escape the painful memories of her past.
She had no idea that the cabin was waiting for her.
Willow Lake was hidden deep within the northern forests, nearly two hours from the nearest town. Its waters were perfectly still, reflecting the surrounding trees like a giant mirror.
The cabin stood alone on a wooden deck overlooking the lake. Warm lanterns hung from its porch, and a comfortable outdoor bed faced the sunset.
It looked like paradise.
But when Emily arrived, she noticed something strange.
The front door was already open.
The Guestbook With Tomorrow’s Date
Inside, everything appeared perfectly arranged.
A small fireplace glowed softly. Fresh flowers stood on the dining table. A handwritten note welcomed her.
“Enjoy your stay, Emily. We have been expecting you.”
She assumed the owner had prepared the message.
Then she noticed a guestbook lying beside the window.
Curious, she opened it.
The first pages contained ordinary messages from previous visitors. Couples described romantic weekends. Families praised the beautiful scenery.
But the final entry made her stomach tighten.
It was dated tomorrow.
October 18.
And beneath the date was her name.
“Emily Carter. I should never have stayed for the sunset.”
She stared at the handwriting.
It was unmistakably her own.
The Woman Across the Water
At 6:42 p.m., Emily stepped onto the terrace.
The sunset painted the lake in brilliant shades of orange and gold.
She sat on the outdoor bed, trying to convince herself that someone had played an elaborate prank.
Then she saw a woman standing on the opposite shore.
The woman wore a white dress.
She stood motionless between two trees, staring directly toward the cabin.
Emily raised her hand.
The woman raised hers.
Emily lowered her hand.
The woman did the same.
A cold feeling spread through Emily’s chest.
Even from that distance, the woman looked familiar.
She looked exactly like Emily.
The Warning Beneath the Floor
Emily rushed inside and locked the door.
Her phone displayed no signal.
Then three slow knocks came from beneath the wooden floor.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
She backed toward the fireplace.
A loose floorboard shifted beneath her foot.
Underneath it lay a dusty metal box containing photographs.
Every photograph showed the same cabin.
Every photograph featured a different visitor sitting on the terrace at sunset.
And in the background of each picture stood a pale woman across the lake.
Emily reached the final photograph.
It showed her sitting outside only minutes earlier.
Behind her, inside the cabin window, stood another Emily.
Smiling.
The Cabin’s Terrible Secret
The fireplace suddenly went dark.
A voice whispered from the hallway.
“You weren’t supposed to look.”
Emily turned.
Her double stood in the doorway.
The woman had Emily’s face, Emily’s clothes, and Emily’s voice.
But her eyes were empty.
“What are you?” Emily whispered.
The woman smiled.
“I’m the one who stayed.”
The walls began to creak.
Outside, the lake rippled for the first time.
The double explained that Willow Lake had been taking visitors for decades. At every sunset, the cabin created a perfect copy of its guest.
One version returned home.
The other remained trapped.
“Which one am I?” Emily asked.
The double tilted her head.
“That depends on whether you remember arriving.”
Emily opened her mouth to answer.
But suddenly she couldn’t remember driving to the lake.
She couldn’t remember booking the cabin.
She couldn’t even remember the previous morning.
The Last Sunset
Emily ran toward the front door.
It would not open.
The woman followed slowly.
“You can fight the cabin,” she whispered. “But the lake always keeps someone.”
Emily grabbed a heavy lantern and smashed the window.
Cold evening air rushed inside.
She climbed through the broken frame and ran toward the wooden steps leading to the water.
Behind her, the cabin began to change.
Its windows stretched unnaturally tall. Its walls bent inward. The wooden porch twisted like the branches of an ancient tree.
Then Emily heard a familiar voice calling from the lake.
“Emily! Don’t jump!”
She turned.
Another version of herself stood waist-deep in the dark water.
This woman was crying.
“She’s lying to you!” the woman shouted. “I’m the real Emily!”
Emily froze.
One version stood inside the cabin.
Another stood in the lake.
Both were begging her to trust them.
Then Emily noticed something.
The woman in the water had a small scar above her left eyebrow.
Emily touched her own forehead.
She had the same scar.
But the woman inside the cabin did not.
For one brief moment, Emily believed she had found the truth.
Until the woman in the water smiled.
And the scar disappeared.
The Photograph That Changed Everything
Emily stumbled backward.
The sky darkened.
The sun touched the distant hills.
Suddenly, every lantern around the cabin went out.
A terrible silence covered the lake.
Then a voice came from behind her.
“Emily, wake up.”
She opened her eyes.
She was sitting on the outdoor bed.
The sunset was still glowing across the water.
Her book lay open beside her.
The lanterns were burning peacefully.
Everything looked exactly as it had when she first arrived.
Had she fallen asleep?
Had it all been a nightmare?
Her phone vibrated.
A message appeared from the cabin owner.
“Hello, Emily. Just checking that you’ve arrived safely. Please remember to sign the guestbook before leaving.”
Emily looked toward the cabin window.
The guestbook was open on the table.
She walked inside and turned to the final page.
Her name was written there.
Beneath it were six words.
“You have already left this place.”
Emily’s hands began to shake.
Then she heard a car engine outside.
Through the window, she watched a silver vehicle pull into the driveway.
It was her car.
A woman stepped out carrying her suitcase.
The woman looked exactly like Emily.
She approached the front door, smiling at the beautiful cabin.
And Emily finally understood.
She wasn’t the visitor anymore.
She was the one who had stayed.
A New Guest Arrives
The front door opened.
The new Emily stepped inside.
“Hello?” she called. “Is anybody here?”
Emily tried to answer.
But no sound came from her mouth.
She tried to move.
Her feet remained frozen against the floor.
Slowly, the new visitor walked toward the guestbook.
She read the welcome message.
Then she smiled.
“What a lovely place.”
Outside, the sun began to sink.
Emily felt herself being pulled toward the window.
Her reflection faded from the glass.
The cabin grew warm again.
The fireplace lit itself.
And across the lake, beneath the dark trees, a pale woman appeared.
She wore a white dress.
She had Emily’s face.
This time, Emily knew exactly who the woman was.
It was her.
And somewhere deep inside the cabin, another voice whispered:
“Enjoy your stay. We have been expecting you.”
The Ending: Some Places Never Let You Leave
Years later, Willow Lake Cabin continued receiving five-star reviews.
Visitors praised the peaceful atmosphere, breathtaking sunsets, and mysterious beauty of the water.
But occasionally, someone mentioned seeing a woman standing across the lake at dusk.
Others reported hearing footsteps in empty rooms.
One guest even claimed to have found a photograph of herself taken before she arrived.
The cabin owner always dismissed these stories as imagination.
Yet every evening, just before sunset, the guestbook gained another name.
And every morning, someone checked out.
At least, that was what the booking records said.
Because at Willow Lake, leaving the cabin and escaping it were two very different things.
The End.
